Power Point Games http://jc-schools.net/tutorials/ppt-games/ .
The application of this technology resource applies to the game of Jeopardy. The interactive feature allows for an engaging review of key concepts that engages the entire class through carefully crafted questions, albeit those who are answering questions or those who are observing the action. Another application of this 21st century technology skill involves having students use inquiry-based learning to generate questions and explore answers. The Jeopardy game reverses the questioning process and celebrates the questioning process. This is applicable to EOC English I review, literature exploration, and research methods and practices for seniors. Differentiation is achieved through a diverse process, higher order thinking skills, student choice in question selection, and multiple intelligences. Furthermore, mixed-media is supported through video and art links.
UNCW Educational Games http://people.uncw.edu/ertzbergerj/ppt_games.html. The game of Guess Louie embraces discovery through language, visual spatial concepts, natural, science and global awareness through interpersonal awareness and choice. This tool of technology supports the learner through the review of informational text. Informational text is considered valuable for all learners and is particularly valuable in post-secondary studies. This format ties with my students across multiple levels in a multi-dimensional format. Furthermore, the link provides scaffolding for learning through problem-solving activities to foster success in standardized testing venues such as the EOC, SAT, and ACT.
Online Parade of Games http://facstaff.uww.edu/jonesd/games/ . The trivia games offered through this website encourage attention to details that allows students to apply concepts across a variety of subjects. Vocabulary support is fostered through the opportunity to provide an explanation and look for the origin of the word. This is also applicable for emerging learners who struggle with figurative language. The game provides an opportunity to practice idioms and their origins. Another benefit occurs through language origin in the study of the Anglo-Saxon and medieval period in support of project based learning.
4Teachers – Teach With Technology (K-12) http://www.4teachers.org.
Video: http://kidsvid.4teachers.org/
The video option supports multiple intelligences as students teach others in an inquiry-based learning opportunity. Multi-media presentations can be used by both the teacher and the learner. Music, art, language, interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences are supported through the ability to apply meaningful material selection to a visual format. Consequently, higher order thinking skills are used as student move based observation of facts to analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating. Through 21st century technology, students learn by teaching others through a differentiation of process.
Sheppard Software http://www.sheppardsoftware.com Games from Elementary to High School
SAT Prep http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/dynamic_multiple_choiceB2.html Sheppard Software is a valuable resource for both vocabulary and writing support. Students are offered another choice that supports vocabulary and writing in a format that allows flexible pacing and second chances for learning. Consequently, this site affords the option to move at a meaningful learning pace without social conflict. The hybrid learner is nurtured through a move toward academic vocabulary that may not be present at home. This authentic activity is foundational for writing success and comprehension. This method of differentiation of process is meaningful for standardized testing as well as oral and written expression. Furthermore, reading comprehension is supported through vocabulary and the ability to write about literature.
National Gallery of Art www.nga.gov/kids/kids.htm.
Lessons that integrate the arts with learning expand the global learning experience for the student. This site links literature to the arts. It also fosters an interpretive environment whereby students have the choice of expression as they can write about art or understand the concept of illustrating a theme. Illustrations are used for mythology to demonstrate learning and to focus on both the extreme abilities and and/or limitations of gods. Literary periods are also connected to the historical periods such as the renaissance period. This art opportunity supports choice through depth of processing that celebrates interpretation in a non-print evaluation of curricular concepts.
Weekly Reader http://www.weeklyreader.com/kids -
Opportunities truly are endless on this site. It will be interesting to observe where students are drawn in through discovery and inquiry. This valuable resource has application for developing questioning skills through opinions and polls. In the spirit of choice and differentiation of process, students are able to create polls to consider the view of self and others to drive problem based learning. The learner may choose to explore educational games for grammar and comprehension and/or use current information in support of learning via instructional text in a self-paced format. As multiple choices are offered with a variety of processes, the learner can tailor his/her educational experience to suit interest level, process, and needs.
Time for Kids http://www.timeforkids.com/TFK/kids
This periodical format engages the learner through informational text using 21st century technology skills. Through inquiry-based learning, the learner is self-directed and can progress at a comfortable pace through a self-selected process. This site encourages the learner to develop skills without social constraints and limitations by offering a diverse approach through differentiation of process. Teaching with informational text links the curriculum to the classroom while creating scaffolded support for inquiry based learning and EOC preparation.
